I'm Feeling So Weightless

When one usually thinks of a concert or a gig, the usual scenario that would flitter through their mind would be: star comes up on stage, audience screams, star says that it feels great to be there or that this is the best crowd ever, then proceeds to sing a few songs before ending the night with a mispronounced "terima kasih!" Well, at least, that was what I expected when I went for David Choi's concert on 19 June. At first when I bought the ticket to his concert, I was worried about how the gig would be like, especially since I still thought of David as the serious, unsmiling cover singer on YouTube; but boy did he prove me wrong. I had never laughed so hard, like terbahak-bahak (what's that in English?) kind of laugh, in a long time. Let's just put it this way, if I had the space to ROFL, I would have seriously ROFL-ed all over the floor. I never expected it to be so interactive, but I guess that's the whole charm and appeal of a YouTube concert - the interaction that happens online transcends the computer into real life. And let's not forget the music. David mostly sung stuff from his second album By My Side, whilst injecting a few of his YouTube hits & a few songs from Only You, all of which sounded absolutely perfect live.

David, equipped with only his trusty acoustic guitar, was mesmerizing when he sang, and totally cheeky when he wasn't. In between songs he'd talk to the crowd as if we (all 400 of us) were old friends, and even asked us what we wanted him to do. One request was for him to speak Korean, so he asked us what he should say. Some people shouted the typical "Saranghae" and "An nyoung ha seh yo", then David would say it, and translate it for the non-Korean-speaking audience. After a couple of words, the guy next to me shouted, "Kimchi!" which obviously resulted in a few laughs from everyone, and after a chuckle David went on to say, "Kimchi means I love you." The funniest thing was that there were people there who actually believed him, the poor things :P Sometime after that, he thought it'd be great to tweet a video of us, so he got us all to do a Mexican wave, but instead of going sideways, we went from back to front, then back again. It took us a couple of times to get it right, but we got it down once he pulled out his camera. He then proceeded to tweet the video with the caption, "The human tsunami in Malaysia!!! These are awesome super sexy durian kimchi smiley face bootilicous toot toot jackhammer" Ehem. I honestly believed some people in the audience might have been on something when I saw that, since David typed what we were shouting at him. It's clear that the crowd was pretty awesome (:

15 songs, and a whole lot of laughs later, we said our goodbyes, with David managing to pronounce "terima kasih" quite well (he had tweeted "terti kamasa" the night before, so he had to redeem himself!) before stepping off stage. I was glad I went despite my earlier doubts, and I'm even more glad that I got to spend time with Irina and Nurain. It was just one of those nights that had me in a daze - getting to hug one of YouTube's biggest stars tends to do that to a person! - and it was easily a great kick-off to the summer holidays. Now, who's up for petitioning to get an International Secret Agents held here? (;
